Policies > Employment and training
There are currently over 600 000 Australian who are unemployed but would like to work. It is the governments responsibility to make sure that unemployment is low and the skills of the workers in our economy match the job vacancies.
1. Invest in national infrastructure. E.g The Pacific Highway duplication is still half completed between Sydney and Brisbane. There are dozens of road and rail projects in Sydney and other Australian cities f that need to begin. To boost employment offer school leavers more 'gap year' paid positions in major road or rail projects and building more public housing. Students can study university part time while doing their gap year. Courses should also be developed for high school students on the theory of construction and design of road, rail and housing so they have a clear link to their gap year after they finish school.
2. Green technology: The federal government needs to help companies entering the renewable energy sector via subsidies and interest free loans.
3. There needs to more vocational training in high school so students have more motivation to study a subject that leads to a guarenteed job.
